Music Education

The Bachelor of Science (licensure) in Music Education degree is designed to train undergraduates to serve public or private schools as highly qualified music teachers. Courses that will develop students’ skills in implementing teaching strategies include elementary and secondary music methods, methods courses in the brass, woodwind, and percussion instrument families, conducting, and private studio lessons. Requirements for degree completion of these courses can be found below. The B.S. in Music Education degree leads to music teacher certification by the state of Tennessee in grades K-12. To be recommended for certification, students must fulfill all course requirements and any additional standards or tests set forth by the Tennessee Department of Education.

  • 6 hours from REL 111 (Understanding the Old Testament), 112 (Understanding the New Testament), 113 (Christian Worldview)
  • MTH 111 (College Algebra) or MTH 112 (Finite Mathematics) or MTH 113 (Mathematics for Humanities)
  • 4 hours from BIO, CHE, PHY, or SCI lecture and lab numbered 100/100L or higher
  • 6 hours from HIS 200 level or higher

  • Ensembles totaling seven (7) hours with at least four (4) hours from vocal ensembles
  • 12 hours of applied voice, piano, guitar, or harp
  • 4 hours in one other applied music area or class piano (If the principle applied instrument is not piano, these hours must be applied piano or class piano)

D2. Instrumental/General K-12 Emphasis(27 hours):

  • MUS 326 (Marching Band Techniques)
  • 1 hour from MUP 111-411 (Bethel University Singers) or MUP 116-416 (Applied Voice) or MUS 161 (Class Voice)
  • Ensembles totaling seven (7) hours with at least four (4) hours from instrumental ensembles
  • 12 hours of applied brass, woodwinds, or percussion
  • 4 hours from applied piano and/or class piano

E2. Minor Required

  • Note: All students seeking licensure in Music Education must minor in Professional Education (Subject Areas). Music Education majors will complete their methods as a part of their major field.

*All music majors are required to pass a piano proficiency examination or enroll in applied/class piano until the examination is passed.
