bm in Music Education

The Bachelor of Music in Music Education degree is designed to train undergraduates to serve public or private schools as highly qualified music teachers. Courses that will develop students’ skills in implementing teaching strategies include elementary and secondary music methods, methods courses in the brass, woodwind, and percussion instrument families, conducting, and private studio lessons. Requirements for degree completion of these courses can be found below. The B.M. in Music Education degree leads to music teacher certification by the state of Tennessee in grades K-12. To be recommended for certification, students must fulfill all course requirements and any additional standards or tests set forth by the Tennessee Department of Education.

D2. Instrumental/General K-12 Emphasis (27 hours):

  • MUS 326 (Marching Band Techniques)

  • 1 hour from MUP 111-411 (Bethel University Singers) or MUP 116-416 (Applied Voice) or MUS 161 (Class Voice)

  • Ensembles totaling seven (7) hours with at least four (4) hours from instrumental ensembles

  • 12 hours of applied brass, woodwinds, or percussion

  • 4 hours from applied piano and/or class piano

E. Minor Required

*All music education majors are required to pass a piano proficiency examination or enroll in applied/class piano until the examination is passed.
